The Waipu Golf Club boasts some of the more scenic sea views you will find at any links course in NZ. While founded in 1934, it didn’t always have such an idyllic location in its early years. After several decades, on three different sites around Waipu, the members finally settled on a stretch of land between Ruakaka and Waipu, overlooking the beautiful Bream Bay. The land was initially leased off the Crown but was then eventually purchased by the club in the early 1980s and has remained the property of the club ever since.
Nestled in the dunes above the beautiful Uretiti beach it displays stunning views from every hole on the course. After many dry summers, in 2022 the club engaged in an irrigation and renovation upgrade to the tune of 1.4 million dollars. Thanks to the generous donations from some of the members and locals, the club now has the luxury of having all 18 fairways irrigated. This gives the course the ability to have grass cover when in the past this was just a summer dream.
The sand based course also allows for an all year round experience as even in the middle of winter it still provides a dry track, while most other course are battling with drainage issues.
With hire carts, friendly staff, onsite caterers and a bar and clubhouse with amazing views of the course and Bream Bay, it’s a must play for any keen golfer visiting the area. Or just worth the visit for refreshments and a meal in the clubhouse.
